This is one of the few times when I can say I haven't read the book first, which is a bit strange as I do love Koontz. Hes a fantastic writer, and I have enjoyed every one of the numerous works of his I've read over the years. I'm not sure if having not read this one yet is an advantage or disadvantage, guess its all in the perspective, but it did make me a blank slate in terms of bias going into the film adaptation. If you've read and watched I hope you will take a moment to comment your thoughts at the end of this one, Id love to hear what the readers thought!
Odd Thomas (Anton Yechin) is just that a bit odd, thus his moniker! He sees things that other don't, like the dead for instance. He is friends with the local Police Chief Wyatt Porter (Willem Dafoe) who is aware of Odds unique talents, and assist each other in numerous ways. Odds lovely lady Stormy (Addison Timlin) is also aware of odds gifts, and does her best to roll with them and the chaos they occasionally cause, attempting to help where she can. they have another common friend in Viola (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who has custody of two beautiful young girls due to a past tragedy, and she does her best by them. They all have a common problem named Fungus Bob (Shuler Hensley), and its up to Odd with the help of his friends to solve the problem!
This one starts fast with Odd seeing a the ghost of a dead girl who leads him to her attacker. He confronts the man there is a fight and the Chief shows up to deflect attention from Odd, knowing he tries to maintain his anonymity. The next day waking from vision of death and mayhem at the hands of faceless frights he makes his way to work as a short order cook where he works with Viola. Viola fearing death is coming for her tells Odd of a nightmare she had, its strikingly similar to Odds vision, asking him what hew sees for her future.
Stormy swings into the diner for for a quick visit, and finds the chief already there. It isn't long after that Fungus Bob happens in bringing with him a horde of ethereal beings, an omen of very bad things to come. These beings feast on the fear and pain associated with extremely violent ends. Something very very bad is coming to Odds little town of Pico Mundo but what? Can Odd put the pieces together in time to save his town or is this the end for all of them??
After watching this one I cant help but wonder why its had such a lack luster critical response. I thought this was a great film, it was fun action packed, really well written, and I loved the chemistry between Anton and Addison. They work so well together, its easy to get sucked right into their story. Willem Dafoe is always an incredible addition to any film, and this one proves no different. His strong character acting skills add a whole additional level of humor to this one, and is another example of why he is so loved in the industry (yeah Im a fan lol).
This is one of those films that doesn't let up, its starts quickly and maintains pace right up until the end. I am usually pretty good at putting together the subtle hints of a film and knowing exactly where it will end up, but this one had me fooled, I was right on for part of it but admit other parts caught me completely off guard and that was pretty awesome! I always love when a writer or director can do that to me. Visually this one is fantastic too, as someone who isn't always the biggest fan of CGI effects I was really impressed with the choices they made in this one! The effects work really well within the story, they make sense and are just really cool to watch, without overwhelming the story.
Odd Thomas is a movie I can see myself returning to often, its that good, it has a bit of everything but stays on track. Its a fantastically fun interesting watch, and its one that will go into the collection for sure! I absolutely mUST read the book now, and I think for the first time ever I find myself saying I hope the book is as good as the movie! lol
