Jack the Giant Slayer caught my attention right away when they started advertising it. I thought it looked like it could be a fun movie for the family, and as a mom I'm always on the look out for those.I first watched this one about 6 months ago when it hit DVD, and since then I have probably seen it a good dozen or more times, its that good! Often times fairytale movies go more the way of Disney in terms of style, this one however goes more along the lines of the old GRIMMS fairy tales, over flowing with a darkness that is macabrely beautiful, and action packed. If you are looking for something both charming and dark to watch with the family this weekend give this one a try!
Jack The Giant Slayer is a darker version of the old tale Jack and the Bean Stalk, with some key differences. The story revolves around Jack (Nicholas Hoult) who lives with his uncle since the death of his parents, and Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) a head strong independent girl of affluence who is set to wed Lord Roderick (Stanley Tucci), a man picked by her father King Brahmwell (Ian McShane). We all know the story so I won't go into it too much here. Rodericks love is not for the princess but for power, and the princess would rather run than wed her betrothed. Jack is a victim of the circumstances of these two and finds himself in an awkward position when she knocks at his door late one rainy evening. Events conspire against the two, and Princess Isabelle finds herself lifted skyward to the land of the mythical evil man eating giants. The next day King Brahmwell, sends Captain Elmont (Ewan McGregor), Lord Roderick and Jack off with additional members of the Kings Guards to find and rescue the Princess, what he doesn't know is that not all of her rescuers have her best interest at heart... Who will make it out of the land of giants alive? Are the giants fated to once again rule the land of man? Watch to find out!
This is one movie I can watch over and over, and then once again! Visually its just an amazing feat. I am not a huge fan of CGI most of the time but this is one of those films that shows you just what an incredibly beautiful effect it can be. The land of the Giants and the Giants themselves are simply breathtaking, full of charm and character. the actors play and respond to them superbly, which lends to the complete suspension of belief that carries throughout the film allowing you to get swept away in this world of make believe. There is simply so much to take in visually this film doesn't ever get old for me.
Just as it is beautiful, the film is also very very dark, with some serious death scenes including one in the end where eyes pop out of one of the Giants, and another where a giant is preparing to cook and eat prisoners they captured. This film hold some moments that could and likely will scare some kids so if you are unsure I definitely recommend parents viewing this one first before sharing it with little ones. That said my kids love this movie, Bree is very familiar with the story of Jack so she was some what prepared for what was coming.
Jack The Giant Slayer is a film that once it hits pace about 20 minutes in it doesn't let up. Its fast action packed with some dark humor thrown in to help break up the scarier moments. The performances given by all are fantastic, Stanley Tucci is a stand out as a self serving villainous Lord, Ewan McGregor comes across wonderfully, and Nicholas Hoult is the underdog that you cant help but root for, striving forward through all odds. Eleanor Tomlinson balances her bravery and vulnerability incredibly well making her character easy to relate too and feel for.
Even though this is a story we have all grown up with somehow the team behind it found a way to keep it fresh and engrossing for the viewer, so even when you know whats coming you cant wait to see it happen. I personally cant understand why this one showed so poorly at the box office it is such a fantastic flight of fantasy! I truly believe this is a film that will develop a large following of fans in the future and be looked back in a much different light. This is one film that will most definitely be going into my collection! And by the way don't thing this is a family only movie, this one is fast fun action packed and dark enough for even adults to enjoy, so if your looking for something a bit different check this one out!
