British Gothic Horror once again took over the silver screen with the American release of The Company of Wolves this day 1985 (UK release 1984). A retelling of the classic childhood tale Little Red Riding Hood that would make the Grimm Brothers proud. Its layered with beautifully stylized and oppressive settings, well done gore effects and serious sexual overtones, as poor Rosaleen (Sarah) is coming of age. It is a must see! The film stars Stephen Rhea, Sarah Patterson, and Angela Lansbury. It really is a beautifully done film that I still return to at least once a year or so! It is credited with helping inspire more modern Lycanthrope films such as Ginger Snaps which also used the metamorphosis of the "change" to allude to a deeper feminine meaning. So revisit the past and check out this wonderful British Film as it celebrates this 30 yr anniversary!
Horror fans around the world pay homage today to one of the modern geniuses of the Horror Genre! Born in Newton, Massachusetts this day in 1972 Eli Roth turns 42 today! Writer, Director, Producer, Animator, & Actor, multi-talented Roth has been dubbed a member of the 'Splat Pack" by the media, but his graphic gory style have won him fans world wide! He's also made numerous forays in front of the camera over the years with some of his early acting work being with Troma in films like Terror Firmer, and Citizen Toxie: Toxic Avenger IV. His filmography has actually grown to be quite vast of the recent years with notable roles in Inglorious Bastards, and more recently Aftershock.
Roth first caught fans eyes with the release of his shockingly bloody film Cabin Fever in 2002, in 2005 he changed the way the world looked at international travel, with his ultra creepy and believable Hostel, and then Hostel 2 in 2007, with numerous other projects in the works currently. This year it looks like we will be able to blame many sleepless nights on him, acting as a producer on Sacrament (releasing May 1), The Green Inferno (releasing September), Clown now completed, and Knock, Knock in pre- production! The 40's definitely aren't slowing this horror phenom down! So raise your glasses in a toast as we The Horror Nation say Happiest Of Birthdays to you sir! You helped reinvigorate the genre and pushed the mainstream envelope, we will forever be grateful as fans!
A favorite television series of my youth, In Search Of, premiered this day back in 1977 and ran until 1982, narrated by the one and only Leonard Nimoy, adding to its appeal. The series conducted investigations into everything from crypto-zoological beings, Aliens, paranormal occurrences and even various historical figures of interest like the Czarina Romanov. The series continued in syndication in the 90s, and spawned off half a dozen or so books as well. In 2002 Mitch Peleggi presented a new version of the series on the Sci Fi channel but unfortunately it didn't find its audience, and only aired from early October - late November of that same year.
The Ukraine became a bit safer this day in 1996 with the arrest of serial killer Anatoly Yuriyovych Onoprienko aka The Beast of the Ukraine & Citizen O. Anatoly confessed to killing a total of 52 victims over a 6 year period begining in 1989. His victims of choice were entire families, choosing first to kill the adult male and then moving onto the women and children often ending in arson to try to cover his tracks. He also killed several unlucky souls who just happened to be in the wrong place at the worng time, as he was committing his acts of violence. Anotoly died while incarcerated at age 54 in 2013 of heart failure.

He has made a livelihood as a support actor filling out the roles in some of our favorite films over the years, and adding his voice talent to some of the best games on the market. He has been involved in such notable series as The animated Clone Wars, and almost every video game in the Star Wars series, as well as war gamer fav Call of Duty. He has also appeared in support roles in films such as Halloween H2O where he is the voice of Dr Loomis, and District 9 just to name a few. I personally Loved him as the B Film Phenom, Oxnard Montalvo, in the animated series The Angry Beavers! So today we say thank you to you Mr Kane for helping make our some of our favorites even more fun, and we wish you a VERY Happy Birthday Sir!
Christian Bale fans sing praises today for American Psycho. this day in 2000 we saw the American release of this cult classic mind bender! Directed by Mary Harron, Its an ultra Violent and sexualized statement on the overindulgent hyper commercialized me era of the 80's. This film left people scratching their heads as they tried to figure out what was real and what was imagined in this fast paced slasher. Initially the film received an NC17 rating, causing a rethink on the edit. They went back and removed 18 seconds of film in the scene involving Bateman and two prostitutes, which allowed for the rating to be dropped to R.
For those who are still unsure as to the reality of Bateman's actions, which has caused much debate over the years, you can read the novel of the same name by Brett Easton Ellis. Although I myself have not read it I have been told it clears up all debate of whether Bateman was in psychotic delusions or was really a serial killer.
The Uber talented actor Ron Perlman turns 64 today, Born in New York 1950. He rocketed to fame back in the 80s playing opposite Linda Hamilton as Vincent (the Beast) in the hugely popular Television series Beauty and the Beast, where he stole hearts with his emotional diversity and depth of character acting skills. As far as I'm concerned everything he is a part of is worth checking out!
He is FANTASTICALLY talented! He has worked numerous times with Guillermo del Toro, in classics of the genre like Cronos, Blade 2, and of course the Hellboy series. He gained accolades for his part in the recent television series Sons Of Anarchy. Some of his lesser known films should definitely be given their respect too such as, The City of Lost Children, a sci fi fantasy film that is very unique and captivating, I Sell The Dead, based on The Burke and Hare crimes, and I could go on and on. His filmography is extensive, crossing over film, television, voice-over for countless projects. A particular stand out of late, for me personally, ins't even something I would normally mention on here but, 3 2 1... Frankie Go Boom is a must see comedy with Perlman playing the role of a transsexual that will have you laughing out loud! With all that being said we here at The Horror Nation would like to extend or warmest wishes for a Spectacular Birthday Mr. Ron Perlman, we look forward to many more years of being entertained by you! Happy Birthday Sir!
