Actor John Cusack celebrates his 48th birthday today! He was a staple in some of the coming of age movies in the 80s but has also been in some favorites of the horror genre as well with titles like Identity,1408 (a favorite in our house) and The Raven. He even made a cameo in punk rock superband Suicidal Tendencies video Trip to the Brain in 1988. Police raid Stonewall Gay Bar in 1969 in Greenwich Village, NY, about 400 to 1,000 patrons riot against police, it lasts 3 days. Its an American Horror of a different sort and is today seen as a pivotal moment in the history of the birth of The GLBT rights movement. The following year to mark the anniversary the first Gay Pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, a tradition that continues today and has grown to international events.
Shirley Jackson's The Lottery is first published this day in 1948 in The New Yorker. It is a fantastically dark tale of ritual and conformity, in a small town fraught with obvious superstition, that rocked the public when originally published. it has since become standard reading for American Literature and Shirley Jackson's contributions to Modern American literature and horror have earned her a well deserved place in history. I am quite the fan of hers and have read several of her shorts as well as novels, if you have never read anything by this great lady The Lottery is definitely a perfect starter piece, and a must read for any fan of horror literature! She is truly a great example of early Women in Horror!
The British American film The Omen celebrates the 38th Anniversary of its US release today (the UK release had been earlier the same month). The film starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick left audiences scared for years to come and is still considered today to be one of the top Horror films ever made. The film went on to be the 5th highest grossing film of the year in the states and I can tell you from person experience it TERRIFIED many. Asca young girl I often remember people being ill at ease with me around when they heard my last name, seriously! Adults would look at me nervously and try to make awkward jokes about checking my hair! Anyway the film stands today as an important film in the genre, and if you have not seen the original 1976 version you most certainly should, both Peck and Remick put in grand performances and Harvey Spencer Stephens as the young boy Damien Thorn is a creepy little guy!
Ufologist probably already know what today is but for the rest of us out there, what is so special about today? Today marks the anniversary of the first widely reported sighting of a "UFO" by businessman and pilot Kenneth Arnold. In describing what he saw he used the terms ""flat like a pie pan", "shaped like a pie plate", "half-moon shaped, oval in front and convex in the rear", "something like a pie plate that was cut in half with a sort of a convex triangle in the rear", or simply "saucer-like" or "like a big flat disk" leading to the press coming up with the phrase Flying Saucer. The incident reportedly took place near Mt Rainier in 1947.
Punk rock Demi God Glenn Danzig celebrates his 59th (wth? when did punk become classic?) birthday today! Best know for founding and being the front man for the bands The MIsfits, Samhain and Danzig, he is also a multi talented music icon, who was the sole writer for all 3 bands! Dont judge this book by it covers this is a man who owns his own label, and publishing company that has been producing his own very adult orientated comics. Most of that is fairly common knowledge but did you know that he also wrote songs for both Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash and wrote and sang a song on the soundtrack for Less Than Zero .And don't forget he flexed his classic muscle muscle with his Aria releases the first one appearing in the top spot of classic music billboard, and his second coming in the top ten. Age doesn't seem to be slowing Danzig down, with a numerous appearances scheduled, additional records due out soon as well as an upcoming role in a biopic film and word that he is working on a film version of one, possibly two of his comics! So Haters can Hate, and jokes are a plenty but I thrashed my 20s away to the music of this man and we at The Horror nation want to wish Glenn Danzig a Hard Rockin Hair Thrashing Happy Birthday!
