- A grand tale in every aspect, it reaches well beyond just a horror novel. As I began this journey into Broadville, I fairly quickly thought I knew where the story was heading, and almost as quickly realized how completely wrong I was, and the story continues to surprise as you move forward. It takes the reader in directions that are fantastical, well thought out and leave you pondering the possibilities. A return to true storytelling as it was meant to be, beautiful, grand, and timeless.
DEVILS SEED is woven together in an epic scale with an a unique ability to bring an almost old world beauty and grandeur to the macabre. Countless times I re-read passages simply because I was so moved by the beauty and detail that the author provided I wanted the words to replay like a song in my head. The book itself was like a symphony ebbing and flowing in its many layers, offering up a bit of everything from traditional horror, psychological drama, action, and even philosophical theories that some may find taboo.
There are a few moments in the first third of the book, where the story is a bit overwritten, but even in those moments you still feel the pull of the story. This is the debut of Fatman Butter and when that is taken into consideration its very hard to find much fault in such a small issue. The styling seems reminiscent of King in some ways as the story begins, but as the it moves along Fatman Butter finds a voice that is entirely his own, and I must say his voice is amazing!
DEVILS SEED is a rare find, the type of book I am always on the lookout for. A thoughtful story that you can return to over and over as the years pass. I absolutely can not wait to see what Fatman Butter has in store for us next, in the meantime grab this one up and prepare to be gripped by one of the most unexpected tales in recent memory.
I highly recommend this new author, and happily give him five out out five fingers!
