The second full length feature by the incredibly talented Twisted Twins Jen, and Sylvia Soska, American Mary is a unique movie that goes beyond just horror with a very interesting glimpse of the sub culture of Body Modification. Some may consider this a revenge genre horror film, but personally I feel that is selling the movie short. This is a film that's so much more than than one label can express. One point of particular interest, all effects in American Mary are practical, and many of the actors are real life members of the body modification community, making this movie that much more interesting and visually captivating.
The story is timeless in many ways. We start off with an overachieving female Med student (Katharine Isabelle), who is struggling to pay her way. Mary is feeling the strains of her financial situation, rent looming she realizes she must do something to supplement her income, and applies for a job at a strip club. Through a strange series of events she finds herself quickly caught up in a world of underground body modification, and revenge.
What sets this movie apart is the way the story is delivered, it has a beautiful subtlety to it that you don't often find in horror. Katharine Isabelle shines in the role, of Mary. Playing the character with a matter of fact sensibility that keeps the film feeling grounded. With the cast of characters that this film has it would have been easy to slip into caricature like portrayals. Instead the Twins and their cast deliver a film fraught with nuanced performances, that keep the movie interesting and make it easy to believe the reality of the characters involved.
Everyone who was a part of this film has much to be proud of, it is a fantastic offering to fans of the genre! This is a film that will appeal to horror fans across the board with its powerful performances, character driven story, and visually engaging effects. It is graphic without being over the top, and stylized beautifully in the use of color, and camera shots. This is a film you need to add to your watch list, or even better, to your film collection! I have no doubt the The Twisted Twins will be making collection worthy films for us fans for a very long time to come!
