Synopsis: A series of brutal, cult-like nurders are taking place at a New England college. Josh Greene, a shy freshman, is the lone survivor of a series of murders that are reminiscent of a similar string of killings some twenty years prior. As he seeks to uncover the secret behind the attacks, he is joined by Detective Forrester, who was instrumental in halting the bloodshed before, and his daughter meg, who had barely escaped being a victim previously. --IMDb
I have to say that I was genuinely surprised with this one. I randomly selected this out of the box of goodies the fine folks at Wild Eye Releasing sent me. I had never heard of it, and had just assumed it was going to be a bad one. Much to my delight, I was wrong.
I found this movie to be fun to watch. It's a slasher film that tips its hat to the 80's. It's got some bare chest scenes and sex--(what 80's slasher movie didn't?!) including a wet t-shirt contest that's so awful its funny. The kill scenes were plentiful and fun, I lost track as to how many beheadings there were. I'm wondering what the record number of heads being cut off in a horror movie is... This one will rank up there regardless. I smiled and laughed at each one, though a single scene made me love this movie-- the killer beheads a victim, then hits Josh in the face with the decapitated head. Yes, this movie is right up my alley. Yes, I've got problems.
I'd hesitate in calling this an homage to earlier slasher films... This is also the only thing that holds the film back. The script. It tries hard to be reminiscent of the golden age of slashers, but then there is comedy shoe-horned into it. It's not a bad thing if it's pulled off seamlessly, but it's not here, it's all over the place. Once the wheels seem to get rolling, we take a quick detour into forced comedic situations. Some works, but sadly most do not.
This flaw shouldn't be a factor at all in deciding if you should watch this or not. The effects are cheesy and tolerable. There's sex, blood, some guts, and nudity. The main characters are likeable and the storyline is solid. That's more than enough reason to give this one a watch.
