London breathed a sigh of relief on this day in 1983, with the arrest of David Nilsen aka The Kindly Killer. Nilsen has been described as the "British Jeffrey Dahmer" due to the similarities of modus operandi. David was a self admitted serial killer and necrophiliac. His crime spree began in Dec. 1978 and continued through Jan. 1983, at which point he is known to have had at least 15 victims although the number could be higher.
Fans of found footage films need to pay respect today to one of the originals. Controversial film Cannibal Holocaust was released on this day in Italy, 1980. This film is considered to be so brutal that even now it is still banned in some countries. Director, Ruggero Deodato,found himself in legal trouble due to the film with obscenity charges and he at one point was charged with the making of a snuff film, as it was rumored one of the actors were actually killed on camera. Ruggero was eventually cleared, but the graphic effects along with the International press have made this film a cult classic for fans of Extreme horror.
Today we lift our lighters into the air and yell Encore! Axl Rose, Lead Singer, and only remaining original member of Guns and Roses, turns 52 (huh?? seriously?!). Born in 1962, he went on to co-found the rock band Guns and Rose. He has named as one of the greatest singers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, as well as others. Rock on!
1988 saw the release of The Serpent and the Rainbow, directed by Wes Craven, and starring Bill Pullman. The film was based on the non-fiction Novel of the same name and garnered financial success with an estimated box office pull of over $19 million, not bad considering the actual budget for the film came in around a measly $7 million
The third installment of John Carpenters Apocalypse Trilogy, In The Mouth Of Madness released in the United States in 1995. The film pays tribute to H.P. Lovecraft, and was written by Michael DeLuca, Directed and Co-Scored by John Carpenter. Although it received some critical success, the film didn't pull in as much as expected at the box office.That however, has not kept the film from going on to cult success and many see this as one of Carpenters best films to date
Sid Vicious vocalist & bassist for the Sex Pistols, dies in New York 1979 of an overdose. Viscous was still under suspicion for the October 12th (1978) death of his girlfriend/manager Nancy Spungen who had bled to death from a single stab wound to the abdomen in the bathroom of their room at the Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan. His mother, Anne, allegedly found a suicide note from Vicious a few days after his cremation, stating "We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby. Bury me in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye."
