VHS 2 is an Indonesian American compilation film made up of 4 segments with a running main story that starts the film and continues after each segment. The individual segments really have nothing to do with each other except that they are all being found, and viewed by the people in the running back story, which is basically a couple of private detectives searching for a missing college student. Their search takes them to his home where they find a strange collection of VHS tapes, one proceeds to watch while the other continues the search of the premises, leading to all sorts of eerie strangeness. VHS 2 is another film in the ever popular found footage horror format.
I will admit I HATED the first VHS movie. I seriously wanted to be refunded my time when it finished. I just didn't get why so many people were gushing about the fear level or genius of the film. It didn't resonate with me at all, and quite honestly left me a bit irritated that I had been duped into wasting an hour and a half of my time. I told myself right then and there, nooooo way would I watch the sequel which was already known to be on the way. Fast forward a couple of years and I had successfully avoided VHS 2 for a while, but as with most horror fans, eventually I succumbed to lack of choices and boredom, thinking what the hell, it cant be worse than the first...
VHS 2 is made up of four mini movies Clinical Trials, A Ride In The Park, Safe Haven, and Slumber Party Alien Abduction, each covering a different possible horror, from Demons to Zombies and Aliens. Each story is wound fairly tightly, offering some interesting perspectives both in cinematography and character viewpoints. There a couple segments that stand out above the others, with my personal favorites being the the final two Safe Haven and Slumber Party Alien Abduction, but surprisingly they were all pretty enjoyable. The back story is ok, but really its just a vehicle to loosely tie the shorts together and offer a doorway for the series itself to become a franchise if they take it that route, however it does offer a few mildly creepy moments.
Once I actually gave in and watched this one, I found myself shocked at the differences from the first. It was a totally different experience, because well, this one was pretty darned enjoyable. I would go so far as to say I actually liked this one, and have even recommended it to some people since watching, heck I've even re-watched it twice! So, if you like me, have been putting this one on the back burner because of the bad taste left from the first Buck up and give in, you may find it pleasantly surprises you too!
